Frequently Asked Questions

 1. What is YESAB’s primary role?

YESAB conducts neutral assessments of projects in the Yukon. We assess the potential adverse environmental or socio-economic effects of proposed projects and issue recommendations on whether projects should proceed, proceed with conditions, or not proceed.

 2. What is YESAB’s purpose?

YESAB’s purpose, on behalf of all Canadians, is to conduct neutral assessments in the Yukon that contribute to protecting the environment and the social, economic, and cultural well-being of First Nations and residents.

 3. Does YESAB make final decisions on projects?

No, YESAB does not make final decisions. The decision maker (governments) consider our recommendations and then make the decision to accept, vary, or reject.

 4. Does YESAB have a role in permitting or enforcement?

YESAB is not a regulator or part of any government department or brand. As a result, we do not issue permits, licenses, or authorizations, and we do not enforce permits.

 5. How does YESAB incorporate Indigenous knowledge and rights into its assessments?

YESAB values First Nations input and Traditional Knowledge alongside Western scientific information in its assessments. We have an Indigenous Partnership Manager to help engage with First Nations and prioritize attending First Nation General Assemblies and meetings with First Nation governments. We also seek ongoing collaboration with Yukon First Nations and Transboundary Nations to identify areas where consideration of Indigenous rights can be improved upon in our assessment process.
